Bluegrass United

A Homeschool Community

What is the BU Academic Center?

The Bluegrass United Academic Center (BUAC) offers core and elective classes for home school high school students who are at least 14 years of age by Oct. 1. The center is designed not as a school, but as a resource center where home schooling parents can receive assistance with electives and advanced course material. It is an entity that soley locates and secures independently contracted instructors to meet with homeschooled students in classes for one or two hours per week.

BUAC consists of two seperate programs. BUAC Core meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays at Rosemont Baptist Church. Most core classes meet once a week, although math and foreign language classes meet twice a week. BUAC Electives meets on Thursday afternoons at Ashland Avenue Baptist Church. Students may enroll in core or electives classes, or both.

Although BUAC locates a meeting place, finds the instructors and provides a light framework in which the center can function, the remaining responsibilities are held by the parents. Parents choose the classes, pay the instructors and hold their children accountable for their roles in the learning process. Parents must also assist in the administration of the center on a limited, volunteer basis. Although BUAC provides course descriptions and instructor biographical information for each class, it is the parent who must make the decision as to whether the class and instructor are appropriate for the child. This design is intended to respect the parents' role as the primary educators of their children.

Bluegrass United desires to make excellence a hallmark of the academic center. For that reason, BUAC seeks to employ instructors who are experienced teachers and/or have expertise in their subject areas. In addition, instructors must demonstrate a commitment to home education, the Christian faith, and the BU mission and core values.

Although BUAC has a strong community spirit, the academic center does not sponsor its own fellowships, sports programs, trips, dances or graduation. Instead, BUAC students participate in activities sponsored by its "umbrella" group, Bluegrass United. This is an effort to keep the area homeschool community united and its programs viable.
